How to do an Arm Bar in Jiu Jitsu

Home Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu How to do an Arm Bar in Jiu Jitsu

One of the most basic and effective techniques in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the arm bar. This technique is achieved by trapping an opponent’s arm between your legs. While grasping control of your opponent’s wrist and holding the arm tight to your chest you lie back and arch. When applied properly and with enough force, this technique causes the elbow to become hyperextended. Because you are using your entire body against your opponent’s arm, this technique can be done by someone that is much smaller than their aggressor. Note that this technique should only be done under a professional’s supervision.

Benefits of a joint lock
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu focuses on the manipulation of joints (joint locks) and chokes. With this being the focus of the fighting style, an individual can end a fight without having to strike their opponent. Another benefit of using joint locks and chokes instead of strikes is that it enables a smaller person to more effectively defend themselves against a larger/stronger aggressor.
